Geeking at its finest! A geek rant

Live Action Role Play. Probably when you hear these words, you think “oh god, another NERD.” Which yes, we are nerds, but there are different groups of us. There are the young teenage geeks that you think of hearing those words, with the wizard hats and fake weapons. Then, you have the hardcore LARPers, which is what I am. I guess we’re the cool geeks. We are the people who pack up all of our costuming, our expensive armor, our expensive latex or calimacil weapons, our expensive boots and bedding into our cars. We drive no matter how long it takes (the longest I have driven was 5 hours) to an event, where we meet people just like ourselves. For the entire weekend, we play as characters we have worked super hard to create, and to build them up to their full potential. These events happen once a month, or more depending if you go to many different games. You meet amazing people who are into the same stuff that you are, then there are the slight few who only LARP and do nothing else that’s nerdy/geeky. Of course, a few rotten apples exist, but you can’t get past that.

I love LARPing, and I have convinced many of my friends to go with me, all who enjoy it after their first time and get addicted, wanting to keep going after. I have a picture around here somewhere that can sum it up…Ah! Here it is!

Yup, that about sums it up.
Once you play, you will never be the same. It will suck you in, believe me, I know. I went one time, and have continued going now for 2 years. I currently play two different games, and with costuming and fees, it’s really expensive, but worth every freaking penny. I would not trade the friends I have made for anything, or the amazingly wonderful boyfriend I am dating, who I met at game.  If you ever get a chance to go LARPing, do it. You only live once, right? Go ahead, go to Google right now. Do you have a separate tab up? Okay, go to the search bar, type in “Live Action Role-plays in insert your area/state”. See how many search results come up. Find one closest, search the site (remember to read the rule book), find the dates the events happen, do more research. Grab some garb for a character, make a boffer (also tutorials online), and go and have fun!!! You will not regret it. Also, if your first experience is nothing special, maybe just find a game that suits you more. Not into Fantasy? Try a Zombie LARP (They do exist). If that doesn’t suit you, there are probably Steam punk LARPs or Sci-Fi LARPs out there, just got to find what suits you best.

Now, when it comes to table top games, there are loads of table top games. I have only experienced one myself, Dungeons and Dragons. Yes, over the years it’s got a bad reputation, being one thing that sets the nerds off from “normals”. I was against playing D&D for the longest time, even though I was LARPing. Finally, my friend convinced me to try it, and took me to a campaign that was just starting. Best 5 hours of my entire freaking life. No joke. It was SOO much fun (as in the picture featured above). I played a Changeling Rogue for my first campaign; it was a 4.0 game, for anyone reading this who speaks nerd lingo. If you have never heard of this, D&D runs like: 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4. which have different rules, different books, and they’re all set up differently. I also recommend trying D&D; don’t knock it until you try it. I bet you’ll have a lot of fun, once you get the hang of it, (Find an awesome DM).

One thing I will probably ramble about, besides LARPing within most of my posts, is Anime. Anime is a form of Japanese animation, which comes in a different variety and types of shows. There is also Manga, which I prefer to Anime, I like reading it better than watching it. Plus, the Manga is always ahead of the anime anyway. I have been addicted to anime since I was a very small child. I got addicted after watching “Card Captor Sakura”, which was the shizz when I was a kid. Then Pokémon came onto the scene, and a plethora of other animes. As I got older and getting more and more into it, I came across something called “Anime Conventions.” I bothered my parents for over a year to take me to one, and they eventually did. It was the best vacation(s) I have ever been on. I have been gladly going to con’s since 2006, but regretfully have to miss one this year. Every year, I try to outdo my last year’s costume (yes, I cosplay. If you don’t know what it is, Google it, you may enjoy it.) I just outright enjoy costuming, and I love “pretending” even though I am a young adult. It still makes me feel amazing, and I enjoy it over much anything else in the world. Looking at an amazing outfit, and knowing that I could make it if I put my mind to it, and actually accomplishment is a big ego boost, and a sense of self satisfaction. Especially wearing it in public and having it appreciated just adds to it. It’s like showcasing how amazing you are.

So, now you know a little bit about me. I would like to know from you, do you do anything of these things? Are you a LARPer, or a closet gamer? Are you a proud gamer? Cosplayer? Anime Artist? Anime geek? Are you interested in this sort of stuff? Etc. Etc. Tell me about your geekery ^_^
Thank you for visting!!

  1. I'm a band geek, hahaha. I love music and I love performing. I enjoy playing World of Warcraft, Halo and all it's sequels and affiliates, and most star wars games. I don't know what most of the things you talked about are, specifically cosplay or whatever. I wish I could draw well enough that someone was capable of typifying it as anime. :)
